The Progressive Pitch
A couple weeks ago, The American Prospect began a discussion (which continued at dKos) of the Democratic/progressive "elevator pitch" -- the single line that defines our political agenda and ideology. They began by defining the effective GOP pitch:
We believe in freedom and liberty, and we're for low taxes, less government, traditional values, and a strong national defense.
What is the progressive agenda in a single 30-word-or-less sentence?
Here's mine:
We stand united for ensuring peace with security, equal rights, fiscal responsibility, saving the environment, and creating jobs and economic opportunity for the lower and middle classes.
Add your suggestions in the comments area. And feel free to rip mine to pieces.

i think i have one that's both more honest and efficient, bob, since it can be used by either side:
"We seek to impose our view of the world, such as it is, onto others by force. To this end, we invoke 'freedom' and other grand words, but all of our energy is funneled into one goal: Forcing others to live as we would have them live."
beating fellow humans over the head without pause is the new egalitarianism. no matter the cover ("policy", "plan", "program"), all populist political doctrines shun equal individual liberty (the key to human happiness) in favor of the imposition of foreign will. period. it really is a shock to me to see adults calling themselves "progressives" and "conservatives" (neither of which term is correct) while selling this anti-liberty dogma. if anybody seriously thinks this permanent battle of the dichotomies will ever lead to a solution or betterment, he's absolutely, and probably irrevocably, nuts.

GOP: We'll use your tax dollars to export brute force around the world (especially where there's money to be stolen) and reward our wealthy campaign donors.
DNC: We're just like the GOP, only we'll be nicer about it.

I've caught several glimpses into the asbestos situation in my surfing over the last couple of weeks--purely by accident. There are so many mentions in so many different contexts, domestic and international, that I can't help but feel that there's more than the usual skulduggery going on here. Can anyone give us an overview? I can't fathom how anyone could consider these lawsuits "frivolous", but then this is the usual Bush way of dismissing anything that has a truly human element involved. These people are monsters.
